[Toucan Tuesday] There are 3 rules for writing a novel

Finally Write Your Novel

Hi Reader!

We just wrapped up the Novel-Worthy Idea Live Challenge and had SO MUCH FUN! If you want to get on the waitlist for the next one, you can do so here.

Today is all about the rules to writing a novel...

“There are three rules to writing a novel. Unfortunately nobody can remember what they are.” - Somerset Maugham.

I read the above quote in a book called Dark Thoughts on Writing, which is one of those collections of question answers from famous writers, which I love.

This quote spoke to my soul, friend. Because I wholeheartedly believe there is ONE rule to writing a novel and that is:

There is no one right way to write a novel. There's also no wrong way to write a novel.

Okay, two rules, lol.

This is why, when we work together to develop your story I won’t tell you how to write a book, but I will guide you on finding your way to write a book (see testimonial at the end of this email).

So, this is me giving you permission to toss aside all the preconceived notions you have about writing a book. All the things you’ve learned about structure, and turning points, and inciting incidents, and dark night of the souls, and all the little things every scene has to have to be considered a "real" scene, and just freakin’ write.

Go. Now! Fire up your computer, open your notebook, grab your stone tablet and chisel and get to work.

Keep writing (or, ya know, get started. RIGHT NOW. Yes, I mean it),

Claire

P.S. If you need some nudging, here are four steps to take to get you on your way (in magical order):

For all of these, sign into your student area first to see if you have these resources already.

  1. Start with your most favorite idea. The one that makes your heart sing and your soul beat (er… your heart beat and your soul sing…). Log into (or sign up for) the resource library to get the Choose Your Next Story Adventure Cheat Sheet.
  2. Create a connection with your idea. Grab your Novel-Worthy Idea workbook from your student area (or sign up for it) and novel-worthy the heck out of it (yep, just made that a verb).
  3. Find time in your busy day and create a writing habit. Get the free Write More in Less Time mini-course to learn how to fit writing into you packed day.
  4. Write like the wind. Start a 30-Day Challenge by logging into your student area and following the 30-Day Challenge lessons (or by signing up for one of the bundles if you don’t already have the challenge in your student area).

You’re about to make some story magic friend!

"Your support this round was phenomenal. I like the way you approached my [writer's] block problem from different angles until something resonated and worked for me. You never gave up even when I was negative and I appreciated that so much.

In 30 days you helped me to discover how to write my book "the Linda Way."

Finally Write Your Novel Hi Reader! While on vacation I got some amazing news. My book coach certification application was accepted, and I am officially an Author Accelerator Certified Book Coach! I instantly burst into tears. That certification was HARD WORK. I wrote up a blog post aaaalll about it here in order to keep this email short. The certification team mentioned my excitement and enthusiasm for my clients and their projects at least three times in their feedback about my application....

Finally Write Your Novel Hi Reader! A month or so ago, I had a tarot reading done (yep, I'm that chick) from Joanna Hennon, a "medium" of sorts I have followed for a few years. I got to ask Joanna's spirit guides three questions. One of them was, “What does my audience need from me most right now?” Her guides told me that you need me to show you that you have choices. That there are infinite possibilities available to you, but you either may not know about the choices, or you feel there are...
